Transport, France's leading source of GHG emissions

The greenhouse effect, which is a natural phenomenon, is accentuated by greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions linked to human activities. According to scientific consensus, this additional greenhouse effect is causing global warming.

iias, which industry in France emits the most greenhouse gases? ๐ŸŒ

๐Ÿ These are the #Transports ๐Ÿš˜!

โœ… Here are a few benchmarks: in #France , national GHG emissions (quantity physically emitted within the country) amount to 441* Mt #CO2eq (million tonnes of CO2 equivalent).

๐Ÿ” In detail* :

โžก๏ธ Transport accounts for 31% ๐Ÿš˜

โžก๏ธ Agriculture and livestock 19% ๐Ÿฎ

โžก๏ธ Residential-Tertiary 18% ๐Ÿš

โžก๏ธ Industry and Construction 18% ๐Ÿญ

โžก๏ธ Energy sector 10% ๐Ÿ”Œ

โžก๏ธ Waste 3% โ™ป๏ธ

โš  Be careful not to confuse #national emissions with France's #carbon footprint; the latter is estimated at 663 Mt CO2eq in 2019** (the footprint takes into account GHGs linked to imports, unlike national emissions).

โœ… In 1990, these emissions represented 554 Mt CO2eq, representing a 20% reduction between 1990 and 2019 (France is aiming for -40% between 1990 and 2030).

Main GHGs linked to human activity

The main GHGs linked to human activity are : ย

๐Ÿ‘‰ Carbon dioxide (the famous #CO2), linked to the combustion of #fossil energies used in particular in #industry, #transport or #housing (โšก๏ธ ๐Ÿš˜))

๐Ÿ‘‰ Methane (#CH4), mainly linked to #agriculture , livestock farming or landfills (๐Ÿฎ ๐ŸŒพ )

๐Ÿ‘‰ Nitrous oxide (#N2O), associated with the use of #agricultural fertilizers and chemicals (๐Ÿงช)

๐Ÿ‘‰ Fluorinated gases (the #HFC and #CFC families in particular), used in particular as #frigorigenic fluids (air conditioners)

PS: water vapor๐Ÿ’ง is the main GHG naturally present in the atmosphere, but human activity has no significant effect on its concentration. It is therefore not taken into account when considering GHGs linked to human activity.
